Massage Practitioner

Find a Massage Practitioner in Los Angeles

A massage practitioner, or a message therapist, treats patients through targeted manipulation of the body's soft tissues.  There are many different types of massage therapy and professionals who specialize in these treatments that can serve a wide range of ailments and purposes.  There are close to 100 individual modalities within massage therapy that have evolved over thousands of years.  Ancient writings on the use of massage as a therapeutic treatment have been found all over the world.

Massage therapists are not the only health practitioners who may treat patients this way — physical therapists, chiropractors, naturopaths and osteopaths may also practice massage.  Massage can focus on the manipulation the body's soft tissues in a variety of ways targeting different parts of the body: specific muscle groups, tendons and ligaments, or even organs.  A practitioner may use their hands and feet, warm stones, vibration, water, or other tools to perform massage.  Because of the wide range of massage modalities, researching specific types of massage may be beneficial for certain health concerns.

The benefits of massage are likewise widespread.  Massage can be used to treat muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries, and to speed recovery after surgery for such injuries.  Additionally, massage can stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding the body in fighting infection.  Massage may also mitigate pain and stress, and can trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin.

Regulation surrounding massage therapy varies by country, and in the US and Canada, by state and province.  In general, there are three levels of recognition for professionals in a regulated environment: licensure, certification, and registry.  Licensure requires the most training and education, while registry carries the least stringent qualifications, with certification falling somewhere in between.  Most licensed massage therapists are required to achieve a certain level of education along with anywhere from 500 — 2000 supervised practicing hours before they are recognized as such.  Again, because of the wide scope of this field, potential clients may want to inquire about individual practitioner's training.
